Tilda Clarke’s multidisciplinary practice explores the body as a site of memory, sensation and lived experience. Working across installation, sculpture, textiles, photography, video and painting, her work considers the relationship between the internal and external landscape, with particular attention to experiences of disability, grief, vulnerability and embodiment.
Her practice is informed by the ways disability can alter an individual’s relationship to their body, environment and sense of self. She explores the internal landscapes that emerge through these experiences, and the ways they might be expressed through material, space and sensory encounter.
Materiality is central to her process. Through ongoing material research, Clarke explores the poetic and sensory qualities of materials, considering their capacity to evoke states of feeling, memory and bodily experience. Texture, weight, tension, softness and form become ways of communicating experiences that can exist beyond language.
Her work moves between the intimate and the environmental, creating spaces in which the physical and psychological, the fragile and the resilient, can coexist.
